Epson Printer Parts “Service Required” Message
One-Time Maintenance Ink Pad Reset Utility

Underscoring Epson’s commitment to supporting its customers, this website has been updated to clear up any misconceptions regarding the serviceability and lifecycle of Epson printers.

Similar to most electro-mechanical consumer devices, the lifespan of consumer inkjet printers depends on many variables of use over time. Epson’s consumer inkjet printers issue a service message to alert customers that the printer’s ink pads are approaching the end of acceptable print functionality. Most print users will never receive this message under intended use scenarios. It is directly dependent on factors like the printer model, frequency, usage conditions, and type of printing over time.

In the event a user receives this alert, the printer needs to be properly maintained in order to continue printing. Epson understands the importance for its customers to be able to print whenever they need to and offers flexible options to extend printing, including:

  1. A one-time Maintenance Reset Utility, enabling north American customers to continue printing for a limited time in order to determine the repair solution that best fits their needs.
  2. Customers can contact the Epson Service & Support team at 562-276-1300 (U.S.) or 905-709-9475 (Canada) (https://epson.com/contact-us) about Epson’s low-cost ink pad replacement service, which includes shipping and packaging round trip to and from Epson.
  3. Customers can also work with a local certified technician to replace the ink pad to extend the use of the printer.
  4. For customers who determine that the printer no longer meets their needs, Epson offers a recycling program as well a wide range of innovative new printing solutions.

Why is the printer displaying a service alert for parts in the printer?

Epson printers are designed to provide the optimal level of print quality and performance. Depending on the level of use, the product may reach a condition where satisfactory print quality cannot be maintained, or components have reached the end of their usable life.

What parts need service on the printer?

The service alert refers to the ink pads. There are a number of porous pads in the printer that collect, distribute, and contain ink that is not used on printed pages. Ink is collected by these pads during the initial setup of the product, during cleaning cycles, and when printing borderless photographs.

Most users will never receive this message under normal use scenarios. However, some high-volume users or those who use the printer for many years may receive this message about ink pads before other components reach the end of their usable life. It is dependent on the frequency and type of printing done over time.

How do I repair the parts on my Epson printer?

Customers can contact the Epson Service & Support team at 562-276-1300 (U.S.) or 905-709-9475 (Canada) (https://epson.com/contact-us) about Epson’s low-cost ink pad replacement service, which includes shipping and packaging round trip to and from Epson. Customers can also work with a local certified technician to replace the ink pad to extend the use of the printer.

For customers who determine that the printer no longer meets their needs, Epson offers a recycling program as well as a wide range of innovative new printing solutions designed for a range of customer applications.

Is this a repair service covered under warranty?

Hardware failures and maintenance messages are typically covered while the printer is covered under warranty or an extended service contract. See your printer’s Limited Warranty or contact Epson Service & Support for more information.

Is there repair service available to printers outside the warranty?

If a warranty is expired, customers can contact the Epson Service & Support team at 562-276-1300 (U.S.) or 905-709-9475 (Canada) (https://epson.com/contact-us) for Epson’s low-cost ink pad replacement service, which includes shipping and packaging round trip to and from Epson. For customers who anticipate heavier use, Epson offers optional, cost-effective, one- or two-year service contracts for inkjet printers.

Can I continue printing temporarily? What is the Maintenance Reset Utility?

Yes, the service alert and service repair process may be temporarily delayed on most printers by using the Maintenance Reset Utility to enable printing for a short period of time. This method is available to Windows users (Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP) as a one-time option while customers determine the best next steps for repairs. Currently there is no Maintenance Reset Utility available to Mac OS users.

Approximately how long can I continue printing once the Maintenance Reset Utility is activated?

The timeline for the message appearing varies depending on the printer model and print volume. It is offered to customers to complete existing print run needs and is not intended for extended use.

How do I access the Maintenance Reset Utility?

You can download the Maintenance Reset Utility if you receive the following message:

Service required window with Maintenance Reset Utility link

Click on the link and complete the required information to download the utility.

This method is available to Windows users (Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP) as a one-time option while customers determine the best next steps for repairs.

I received the message, “A part inside your printer is at the end of its service life. Service is required.”

Service required window with Close button required

If you receive a message that includes “Service is required,” the Maintenance Reset Utility was already used on your product. The Maintenance Reset Utility cannot be used again in order to ensure the proper operation of the printer and to minimize the risks of property damage. In most cases, when this message occurs, the printer's ink pad needs to be replaced.

If you want to continue using the printer, the following options are available for repair to continue using the printer.

  1. Customers can contact the Epson Service & Support team at 562-276-1300 (U.S.) or 905-709-9475 (Canada) (https://epson.com/contact-us) about Epson’s low-cost ink pad replacement service, which includes shipping and packaging round trip to and from Epson.
  2. Customers can also work with a local certified technician to replace the ink pad to extend the use of the printer.
  3. For customers who determine that the printer no longer meets their needs, Epson offers a recycling program as well as a wide range of innovative new printing solutions.

I never received the message displayed above, but my printer is displaying an end of life service alert. Why?

In most cases, when this message occurs, other printer components also may be near the end of usable life and satisfactory print quality cannot be maintained. If you want to continue using the printer, please contact the Epson Service & Support team at 562-276-1300 (U.S.) or 905-709-9475 (Canada) (https://epson.com/contact-us) or work with a local certified technician.

How can I avoid this issue in the future?

Epson offers optional, cost-effective, one- or two-year service contracts for our ink jet printers in addition to the standard one-year warranty. While under warranty or service contract, hardware failures and maintenance messages are typically covered repairs. With one of these options, you can ensure the continued operation even with heavy use for up to three years.

For customers who determine that the printer no longer meets their needs, Epson offers a recycling program as well as a wide range of high-volume printers, including the Epson EcoTank or Epson SureColor line of printers, designed to accommodate higher volume printing needs and applications. Customers can reach out to Epson’s Service and Support team for help choosing the ideal printer model for their individual printing needs.
